In the backdrop of the dotcom bubble burst, companies cleaned up the excesses of the nineties and are more agile and efficient than ever before. However, companies face tremendous pressure to improve shareholder returns. A new trend is emerging as more and more capital is flowing into Private equity, especially in the buyout industry. Both established and entrepreneurial companies are exploring new ways to partner with Private equity firms to restructure and build long-term shareholder value. In this thesis, I will perform an in-depth study of private equity led merger and acquisitions trends since the bubble burst. I will investigate the emerging trend of tech buyouts, activist led corporate governance reforms, analyse tech buyout transactions from 2000-2005 and comparative study of 3 tech buyout firms, and leadership challenges in the private equity industry.
