In the spring of 2020, with the support of affiliated faculty, current students, alumni, and MIT Schwarzman College of Computing Dean Daniel Huttenlocher, the Committee on Graduate Programs approved a request to change the name of CCSE’s SM degree program from “computation for design and optimization” to “computational science and engineering.” This change brought consistency to the names of the Center, its interdisciplinary SM program, and the interdepartmental PhD program. The CSE name also better reflects the scope of the education received by our SM students, and is better aligned with the terminology being used across industry and academia, both nationally and internationally. The change in degree name came into effect for diplomas issued in September 2020; please see the link below for CDO SM theses from June 2020 and prior.
