Highlights of this Course

This course features full set of lab exercises for exploring the human speech process. In addition, a large lab database of speech samples, formatted for use with Klatt Speech Analysis software, including links to other freely available compatible software, are available.

Course Description

The course focuses on experimental investigations of speech processes. Topics: measurement of articulatory movements; measurements of pressures and airflows in speech production; computer-aided waveform analysis and spectral analysis of speech; synthesis of speech; perception and discrimination of speechlike sounds; speech prosody; models for speech recognition; speech disorders; and other topics.

  • 2 1-hour lectures per week
  • 2 labs per week

  • term project, with short term paper
  • no exams


Technical Requirements

Media player software, such as QuickTime® Player, RealOne™ Player, or Windows Media® Player, is required to run the .wav files found on this course site.
